Top Beach Recommendations Near Liverpool
Liverpool might be famous for its historic port and football, but if you’re craving sandy shores and the sound of waves, the city has access to some amazing coastlines. You don’t have to go far; the Merseyside area has a string of beaches, each with its own unique character.
Art by the Sea and Vast Sands
Crosby Beach is easily the most iconic destination. What sets it apart is the “Another Place” installation. There are 100 life-sized iron men spread across the shore, facing the horizon. At high tide, they “drown” partially, and at low tide, they reappear. It’s a magical sight, especially if you visit in the late afternoon.
The shoreline is massive, perfect for a long walk. Just a heads-up: swimming isn’t recommended here due to strong currents and patches of soft mud. Stick to enjoying the view and snapping some aesthetic photos.
Sand Dunes and Pine Forests
If you want a mix of wild nature and beach vibes, Formby Beach is the answer. Managed by the National Trust, this beach features towering sand dunes that are fun to climb (or run down!). Behind the dunes, there’s a pine forest that serves as a sanctuary for rare red squirrels.
The beach is clean, spacious, and feels much more “wild” than others. It’s perfect for a family picnic or if you just need some “healing” time away from the city buzz. The air is fresh, and the sea views are completely uninterrupted.
Classic Seaside Town Vibes
Heading over to the Wirral Peninsula, you’ll find New Brighton. This is your classic British seaside resort. You can walk along the promenade, hit the arcades, or check out the Perch Rock Lighthouse. Bonus: you get a great view of the Liverpool skyline from across the river.
There’s also West Kirby, which has beautiful soft white sand. The water here is usually calm, making it a popular spot for watersports like windsurfing or kayaking. If the tide is way out, you can even walk across the sands to the Hilbre Islands (just make sure to check the tide times so you don’t get stranded!).
